A Founder's Guide to Cost-Effective App Development

Cheap and cost-effective are different things. Where to save, where not to, and how to read a quote before you sign it.

The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest project. Cost-effective development means spending on the parts that are expensive to change later, and saving on the parts that are not.

Spend here

  • The data model — it outlives every screen built on top of it.
  • Authentication, payments and anything regulated.
  • Automated tests and a deployment pipeline from the first sprint.

Save here

  • Custom design for internal admin screens — use a proven component kit.
  • Features nobody has asked for yet.
  • Native apps when a responsive web app would do the job.

Reading a quote

A good quote lists what is in scope, what is out of scope, and what happens when the scope changes. If a quote cannot tell you those three things, the low number on it is not the number you will pay.
